Recruitment isn’t just about competence, it’s about values.
Most companies believe that recruitment is about competence.
But the truth is that it’s about values. When you lose the people who share your values, you risk losing everything you’ve built.
It’s not the products or services that determine a company’s success, but the people behind them.
When passion loses its meaning
Many years ago, I worked at a restaurant where the owner poured his whole heart and soul into the food.
Every dish told a story, and guests loved not only the taste but also the warmth and meaning behind it.
But even a place filled with passion can face the abyss.
Have you ever felt that something important is slipping away, even though everything looks fine on the surface?
You, who have poured your soul into building something you’re proud of, but now wonder whether you’re starting to lose what once made you unique.
It hurt to see it.
I saw how the restaurant started losing its most important employees.
Why?
The owner no longer cared about what once gave the work its meaning, neither for the guests nor for the team.
The focus was no longer on the experience, but on the numbers.
Costs had to be reduced, margins squeezed.
The employees no longer felt seen or appreciated, and their work no longer felt meaningful.
And when the sense of meaning disappears, people do too. That experience taught me one thing:
If you lose the right people, you lose what made your dream come alive.
When experience is not enough
I saw the same pattern at an industrial company in Värmland.
They didn’t struggle to find candidates but to keep them, even though they offered good pay and stability.
Three new employees quit within two months.
All of them had the right experience on paper, but none of them truly felt at home there.
At the same time, there were younger employees without long experience but with a strong desire to learn, take responsibility, and grow together with the company.
According to HR Sweden, 46 percent of new employees leave within the first year when they don’t feel a cultural sense of belonging.
That experience said it all:
It’s not just about competence or experience, but about commitment, values, and the willingness to contribute to something bigger.
In fact, companies with strong values alignment have up to 70 percent higher retention among new employees. (Source: SHRM)
Recruitment is not about filling a position
It’s easy to think that recruitment is about filling a position.
But companies that dare to think beyond competence build teams that share the same purpose, stay longer, and move the company forward even when times get tough.
At TM Connect, we believe that the right people don’t just fill a role, they strengthen the company’s culture and its future.
